Behind your Music

OK, everyone talks about bands and how great they are and how amazing their sound is, but how many people talk about the producer's behind the bands and their sound?  Here's my salute to the top 10. According to me...that's right.

1. Martin Hannett:

This is the dude who's playing the dude...JK.
This is the man, founder of Factory Records, produced perhaps punk's greatest album: The Buzzcock's SPIRAL SCRATCH,  not only that, but he discovered and produced all of Joy Division' albums. Genius.

2. Ted Templeman:

The man behind the Doobies, Van Morrison, Little Feat and Captain Beefheart. Oh,  and he was credited by giving a little known band their magical studio sound: Van Halen.

3. Nigel Godrich:

Sometime's referred as Radiohead's sixth member, need I say more? Not only that, but he's produced all of Pavement, Air, Travis, beck and Ultrasound. Yeah, this dude is the shit.

4. Bob Rock:

The name says it all. The man behind one of history's most amazing Heavy Metal album's: Metallica's Black album. He's also worked with The Cult, Lostprophets and Veruca Salt, but his work with the Black album will put him in Rock N' Roll history.

5. Brendan O'Brien:

Impossible to think about Pearl Jam without thinking of Brendan, an amazing musician and founder of Epic records, 13 of his album's have reached number 1 in the USA. Also known for his amazing studio work with Paul Westerberg and The Stone Temple Pilots, without this dude, the alternative music scene would have passed in obscurity.

6. Brian Eno:

If you don't know who this is, burn your ipod now and crawl under a rock and die. The master behind Bowie's Berlin Trilogy.  Producer of U2's The Joshua Tree, the brains behind DEVO, and he's known as the father of ambient music, not only that, but he played the mixing desk, that's right, the mixing desk for Roxy Music.

7. Dangermouse:

Brian Joseph Burton. In 2004 he released The Grey Album, one of music's most amazing hidden gems. After that he decided to produce for Gnarls Barkley, Gorillaz, Sparklehorse, and The Rapture.

8. Butch Vig:

If O'Brien was the steady hand behind the alternative movement, nothing would have happened without Butch's work on Nirvana's Nevermind and The Pumpkin's Siamese Dream.

9. Ross Robinson:

The godfather of Nu Metal. Korn, Sepultura, and Machine Head would have never happened without his studio know-how and ability. But his most breakthrough work has been with At The Drive In.

10. Steve Albini:

The Stooges, Pixies, PJ Harvey, Manic Street preachers, Flogging Molly, Joanna Newsom, Jawbreaker, Superchunk, Slint, Sao...this guy is changing the way the game is played, not only that, but his band Shellac is plainly awesome.
"I charge whatever I feel like at the moment, based on the client's ability to pay, how nice the band members are, the size and direct proportional gullibility of the record company and whether or not they got the rock..."
PORNSTAR!!!!!!
